Dr. Bhaskar Sen Gupta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Science at IISER Berhampur. He received his Ph.D. in Physics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Following his doctoral studies, he carried out postdoctoral research at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel, Yale University, USA and Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Germany, working on soft condensed matter systems using computational statistical physics and theoretical approaches.
Dr. Bhaskar Sen Gupta’s current research focuses on the physics of nonequilibrium soft matter, with particular emphasis on phase separation, coarsening dynamics, active matter, and amorphous materials. His research seeks to understand how microscopic interactions, transport mechanisms, confinement, and nonequilibrium driving influence the structure and dynamics of complex materials. His research group employs computational statistical physics and scaling approaches to investigate phase separation and coarsening in bulk and confined systems. Another major research direction is the study of dewetting and rupture of active liquid and solid thin films on smooth and heterogeneous substrates. The group investigates how activity, interfacial interactions, and substrate heterogeneity influence film stability, rupture dynamics, morphology, and pattern formation.
The group also studies the mechanical properties of glassy materials, including passive and active glasses. This research focuses on the microscopic origins of deformation, yielding, and mechanical response in amorphous systems, and on how self-propulsion modifies the mechanical behavior of active glasses.
