‘Empowering Renewable Energy Integration Using AI Enabled Smart Grid Initiative’
The project carried out at the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) represents a significant milestone in the realm of renewable energy integration and grid modernization. In an era where the world is making a concerted effort to transition to renewable energy sources, India, in particular, is at the forefront of this transition. With the emergence of AI-enabled smart grid frameworks, advanced data-driven techniques are increasingly being leveraged for forecasting, optimization, and real-time control of power systems. The project embodies the core objective of the Mission Innovation Challenge on smart grids: to develop affordable, reliable, and renewable-powered grids while reducing fossil fuel dependency. It primarily focuses on India's transition to renewable energy, with a particular emphasis on wind and solar, which collectively contribute to more than 80% of the nation's renewable energy generation. As India aims to achieve the Government's renewable target of 500 GW by the end of 2030, the rapid integration of solar energy into distribution systems presents a unique set of challenges.
