Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Experimental condensed matter physics is the branch to study the solids both at macroscopic and microscopic level. It helps to understand various fundamental physical problems by studying the interaction of atoms and/ electrons. Further, it helps to correlate these interactions with the origin of various physical properties such as electrical, magnetic, optical, thermal, elastic etc. It always motivates physicists to explore or discover new materials with extraordinary properties which are relevant for fundamental understanding of solids and liquids. Few examples of exciting solids and liquids are Metals, Semiconductors, Insulators, Magnets, Foams, Thin membranes, Superfluids, Superconductors, Organic molecules, Polymers, Complex liquids, nano and meta materials and Graphene. In addition to fundamental research, experimental condensed matter physics intends to address societal relevant key issues as well like energy, security, sensors, nano, opto and bio electronics; nano and bio photonics. The breadth and utility of experimental condensed matter physics makes it an essential part of the Department of Physical Sciences at IISER Berhampur.

Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics
Theoretical research at the frontiers of condensed matter physics aims to gain deeper understanding and uncover fundamentally new phases of matters governed by the principles of quantum mechanics. Interests range from topological insulators and superconductors to quasiparticles in semiconducting materials and ultracold quantum gases, as well as from quantum thermodynamics and quantum phase transitions to control of closed and open quantum systems.

High Energy Physics
High Energy Physics Fundamental particles and their interactions hold the key to the mysteries of our Universe. Our eternal quest for these mysteries led to spectacular discoveries and inventions. There are four fundamental interactions namely strong, weak, electromagnetic and gravitational that govern the dynamics of Nature. Barring the gravitational interaction, Standard Model (SM) of particle physics beautifully explains all the fundamental particles and their interactions. Nevertheless, there are some experimental observations which require not only better understanding of the existing theory but also brand-new ideas There are astrophysical and cosmological observations, like the presence of dark matter, dark energy etc., which cannot be accommodated in SM. On top of it the existence of neutrino mass, matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe also necessitates new physics beyond SM (BSM). We are involved in the exploration of various BSM scenarios with emphasis to dark matter and neutrino physics. The theory of strong interaction, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD) is of utmost interest in our understanding of the early Universe. This is because it is QCD which governs the dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that existed in the very early Universe. Our group is involved in the research of QGP which in the modern times can be mimicked in the high-energy colliders via relativistic heavy ion collisions (HIC). We perform both experimental as well as theoretical research on HIC phenomenology that serves multi-directional opportunities of studies e.g., unravelling the hot and dense QCD medium properties, the physics of the QCD phase diagram etc. Further, the study of QGP helps to explore the core of neutron stars as well as the early universe.

Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Experimental condensed matter physics is the branch to study the solids both at macroscopic and microscopic level. It helps to understand various fundamental physical problems by studying the interaction of atoms and/ electrons. Further, it helps to correlate these interactions with the origin of various physical properties such as electrical, magnetic, optical, thermal, elastic etc. It always motivates physicists to explore or discover new materials with extraordinary properties which are relevant for fundamental understanding of solids and liquids. Few examples of exciting solids and liquids are Metals, Semiconductors, Insulators, Magnets, Foams, Thin membranes, Superfluids, Superconductors, Organic molecules, Polymers, Complex liquids, nano and meta materials and Graphene. In addition to fundamental research, experimental condensed matter physics intends to address societal relevant key issues as well like energy, security, sensors, nano, opto and bio electronics; nano and bio photonics. The breadth and utility of experimental condensed matter physics makes it an essential part of the Department of Physical Sciences at IISER Berhampur.

Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics
Theoretical research at the frontiers of condensed matter physics aims to gain deeper understanding and uncover fundamentally new phases of matters governed by the principles of quantum mechanics. Interests range from topological insulators and superconductors to quasiparticles in semiconducting materials and ultracold quantum gases, as well as from quantum thermodynamics and quantum phase transitions to control of closed and open quantum systems.

High Energy Physics
High Energy Physics Fundamental particles and their interactions hold the key to the mysteries of our Universe. Our eternal quest for these mysteries led to spectacular discoveries and inventions. There are four fundamental interactions namely strong, weak, electromagnetic and gravitational that govern the dynamics of Nature. Barring the gravitational interaction, Standard Model (SM) of particle physics beautifully explains all the fundamental particles and their interactions. Nevertheless, there are some experimental observations which require not only better understanding of the existing theory but also brand-new ideas There are astrophysical and cosmological observations, like the presence of dark matter, dark energy etc., which cannot be accommodated in SM. On top of it the existence of neutrino mass, matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe also necessitates new physics beyond SM (BSM). We are involved in the exploration of various BSM scenarios with emphasis to dark matter and neutrino physics. The theory of strong interaction, the quantum chromo-dynamics (QCD) is of utmost interest in our understanding of the early Universe. This is because it is QCD which governs the dynamics of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that existed in the very early Universe. Our group is involved in the research of QGP which in the modern times can be mimicked in the high-energy colliders via relativistic heavy ion collisions (HIC). We perform both experimental as well as theoretical research on HIC phenomenology that serves multi-directional opportunities of studies e.g., unravelling the hot and dense QCD medium properties, the physics of the QCD phase diagram etc. Further, the study of QGP helps to explore the core of neutron stars as well as the early universe.

Optics and Biophotonics
We are engaged in developing new innovations in optics, focusing on the development of instruments and methods that enable the visualization of the photoreceptors, vasculature, and other less explored retinal layers at a sub-cellular resolution. To achieve this, we exploit the power of adaptive optics technology to correct wavefront aberrations. We are interested in understanding the structural changes of retinal layers due to diseases with the goal of advancing the diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases. Further, we extend our focus beyond the laboratory, as we work to develop practical instruments and devices that bridge the healthcare gap for patients in remote and underserved areas. Join us on this transformative journey, where funding agencies and aspiring students can make a lasting impact on the future of ocular healthcare.

Intigrated BS-MS programme
It is a five year dual degree program for bright and motivated science students who have passed class XII. The program integrates classroom learning with research and provides ample scope for multidisciplinary interactions. The first two years of the programme consist of core courses in basic sciences, the third and fourth years are dedicated to specialization in chosen science subjects and the fifth year includes a research project. The training during the programme enables students to pursue a career in academia, R&D Institutes and science based industries.
Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.)
The Department offers Ph.D. programmes in different areas of Physics. A prospective candidate should have completed a postgraduate programme (M.S./M.Sc./M.Tech./MBBS) in a discipline relevant to his/her choice of Ph.D. programme along with qualifying a national entrance exam. Students should have a valid National level examination like National Eligibilitiy Test (NET)/GATE/UGC-JRF/CSIR-JRF/DBT (JRF A category)/ICMR (JRF category I)/NET-LS/INSPIRE-Ph.D./Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship/JGEEBILS or any other recognized score is mandatory. The certificate/fellowship MUST be valid at the time of admission.
Doctoral students must successfully complete course work, qualifying examination, seminars, and a dissertation. Besides the mandatory requirements, students are encourages to participate in several professional activities such as workshops, review meetings and conferences. All doctoral students are also expected to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme of the Institute as a part of their training.
Integrated Ph.D. (iPh.D.) Programme
The Department offers is offering a highly competitive Integrated Ph.D. (iPhD) programme to bright and highly motivated undergraduate students keen on pursuing a career in the frontier areas of research in Physical Sciences. The iPhD programme at IISER Berhampur is a program that combines curricula of Masters and Doctoral degrees into a single integrated programme with an amalgamation of rigorous coursework and high-quality research, eventually culminating in a Ph.D. degree. The students enrolled in iPhD programme will be entitled to get a 2-year MS fellowship and Ph.D. fellowship for a maximum of 5-year.
