Introduction
Welcome to the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Earth & Environmental Sciences (EES) is an ever-emerging interdisciplinary area of research and technology application. It directly influences the present and future of our planet and delves into the challenging domains of climate change. Global warming, alternative energy, CO2 sequestration, natural hazards and mitigation, disaster management and early warning system, exploration and judicious exploitation of natural resources, groundwater recharge, and conservation, among others. Integrated studies on the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere provide a unique opportunity to apply fundamental principles of physical, chemical, and mathematical sciences in understanding the evolution of our planet and life in particular.
Earth system science extends into the emerging area of planetary sciences as well, for example, the Mars and Lunar Missions and the search for extra- terrestrial life (Exobiology). The students completing this will be competent for careers in Academia, and R&D. Professional fields such as the mineral and mining industry and urban planning are some other career prospects. At the end of the 4th year, students may opt for a one-year MS research project and obtain a BS-MS dual degree in Geological Sciences after its successful completion.
Academia, R&D, mineral and mining industry, urban planning, environmental monitoring, geospatial engineering includes some of the career prospects in EES. The BS-MS programme in Earth and Environmental Sciences was introduced in 2022-2023.

Opportunity
EES offers multitude of career opportunity. EES encompassing a very wide spectrum of scientific disciplines that provides wide scope for application of physical chemical sciences in understanding the internal structure and composition of the Earth and terrestrial planetary bodies, hydrosphere, atmosphere, environment and organic evolution. Students will have ample opportunity to pursue academic and research career. Besides academia students may also select professional career in exploration, mining, mineral and hydrocarbon industries. Environmental management, disaster management, seismic hazard and early warning, groundwater management, urban planning, geospatial engineering are also some of the emerging key areas of employment in the coming days. Currently PhD and Post Doctoral Fellow positions are available.
